Canyon at Dawn 1
These mixed media pieces on stretched canvas were painted at the same time and were a challenge for me to paint in monochrome instead of the bright colours I usually work in. Because of my restricted colour palette I had to really think about my textures and how to include enough variety to make the paintings interesting. Inspired by a visit to the Grand Canyon I tried to give a sense of distance by using bold textures for the foreground leading to softer textures at the horizon and a softly-painted drippy sky. I chose blue for my palette because I wanted to portray the canyon in the early morning light while it was still and silent and almost holy.
